Harishanthan, a visually impaired photographer from Tamil Nadu, has always been driven by his passion for photography. Yet, his journey to success was far from easy. His determination was never in doubt, but financial struggles weighed heavily on his path. In the early days, he borrowed money to learn photography, but despite his immense passion, his talent went largely unrecognized.
Everything changed when NAAI (National Abilympic Association of India) provided him with the opportunity to participate in competitions that celebrate the skills of differently-abled individuals. "NAAI’s support truly shaped me into a professional photographer," he recalls.
In 2007, Harishanthan participated in an NAAI competition in Delhi and was honored to receive a gold medal from the then Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit. This recognition was the turning point in his career, propelling him to represent India in an international competition in Japan, where he proudly won a bronze medal. From that moment onward, photography was no longer just his passion — it became his profession.
Despite facing doubts from potential clients about his ability to capture special events due to his disability, Harishanthan persevered. Over the years, his work spoke louder than the doubts. Today, he runs a successful photography studio from his home in his village, supporting his family and funding the education of his two children. His wife has stood by him as a constant pillar of support throughout this remarkable journey.
Recently, Harishanthan participated in another NAAI photography competition and secured a silver medal. This achievement reignited his determination and fueled his ambition to pursue a gold medal at the upcoming international competition.
Harishanthan’s story carries a powerful message for all persons with disabilities: "Just because you don't have wings, don't stop from flying. Don’t ask anyone for wings to help you fly. Make your belief your wings. The sky is yours."
Beyond photography, his dreams continue to soar. Harishanthan aspires to become a renowned film director, and he has already produced a few short films. His journey stands as a testament to resilience, talent, and the unwavering support of organizations like NAAI and Sarthak in helping individuals achieve greatness against all odds.
